Mentoring is the hallmark of Maryland’s African American Studies Department. The department affords numerous opportunities for faculty to guide the development of AASD students, from the intensive one-on-one thesis experience under faculty guidance to the sharing of professional or career-oriented experiences. Indeed, the high level of faculty and staff interaction with students is a trademark of AASD that reflects in everything from mandatory advising, to classroom instruction, to thesis advising, and to student access to faculty members.
