The African-American Studies Department strongly condemns the shootings in Atlanta that resulted in the deaths of 8 individuals, 6 of whom are Asian-American women. We stand in solidarity with the Asian American community at UMD, in the state of Maryland, and across the US in combatting the history of discrimination and violence towards Asian Americans.
As a department committed to ending structural racism and uplifting racial justice, we call on the UMD community to work with us in ending the senseless violence that has disrupted and taken the lives of so many people of color in the US. Join us in celebrating the intellectual, economic and cultural contributions that Asian Americans and all people of color have made to enriching our campus, state and nation. We are not free and liberated until all people of color are free from hate, violence and injustice.
